The default upcoming block uses the node updated field, which works fine. When changing it to use a CCK date field, however, the result is not filtered at all. In looking at the query, there is simply no where clause for the CCK date field. The setup I'm using is trying to filter the upcoming block by a cck date field "greather than or equal to now". The attached screen shot shows all the view settings, plus the output query with no date filter at all applied.
I am having the exact same problem with the iCal feed view. It is coming up blank, using the same basic settings as the upcoming block.

The recommendation: use the development (dev) version of the date and calendar modules.
I typically avoid using development versions in production, but in my opinion the date and calendar projects are well maintained and I will trust their dev versions not to break anything critical.
