You may try the Drupal theme generator, which generates tons of variations on standard templates. Take a look at the responses and get the latest code to test. But it might be better to create your own.

Try www.oswd.org and www.openwebdesign.org and try making your own theme.

I f.e. made one of andreas themes work for my site (www.scrolls.org/andri). Plan on making a new one and releasing it soon.

I used box_grey for comparison and the handbook pages on phptemplate creating.

It wasnt that hard.

No, it's not compatible; you either have to make a phptemplate that outputs the required HTML elements or (what I have done) take a phptemplate theme and adapt the OSWD CSS. Slight modification of the phptemplate theme can be required though.
