On Debian and Debian based systems, it's necessary to add a couple of ini_set()s to the settings.php
file, otherwise the session garbage collection of PHP (and Drupal) would never run resulting in very, very large sessions table.
The instructions are at http://drupal.org/node/35834 I wonder if this should be included somewhere in the installation guide as a Hint or so. It was really helpful.

jhodgdonJust to clarify what this issue is:
I just took a look at the page linked above (http://drupal.org/node/35834) which is in the Post Installation support forum.
It appears that in #72856: Expire Anonymous user sessions, some settings were added to the D7 settings.php to make sessions expire and get cleaned out. The issue is marked as "to be ported" to D6, but that marking was done back in June of 2010 and it hasn't happened.
So the request here is to add to the D6 installation guide to make a suggestion that these lines be added manually to the settings.php file for people running Drupal on Debian-based servers.
