I would like to allow certain users to be able to essentially have their name listed in a content type with a single click of a checkbox (for now on the edit form for the node is fine). Ideally it would use a profile field in their user account, but username is good enough.

What I'm doing is creating a legislative site where those who did not submit the piece of legislation could "co-sponsor" it and put their name on it alongside the original author's as a sign of support for it.

I think the flag module would work for this.
