What's the latest on event registration, letting authenticated users easily sign up for offline events?

There's an old discussion about it here:
Event Registration module neededIt all sounds very confusing...

I tried the RSVP module a couple of days ago, but I ran into all kinds of trouble. Then I tried CiviCRM, but it doesn't have event registration/RSVP (yet?).

Is there a clear solution for this?

Just installed the Sign Up module. First impression is that it does nicely what the RSVP module was supposed to do.

Does anyone have experience with these modules?

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any integration between EventFinder and SignUp. Is anyone working on that?

We were relying entirely on a 'reminder' email to get the details to people. I'm on drupal.org right now to figure out why the 1 day reminder didn't get sent. Otherwise, it seemed to work.

However, there was also confusion amongst new visitors who thought that merely registering for an account was the signup form, so they didn't actually sign up.

If anyone has an idea what could be done about the reminder email, please contact me via my user page.
