I use www.tektonic.net, which is a distributor of ev1.

You get full shell access, and I THINK they just increased the VPS servers to unlimited bandwidth. I could be wrong about that though. I pay $15/mo.

Tech support it always good. they usually get back to me right away.

I did have bizarre downtime the other night for a few hours. I have yet to know WHY it happened. I think they have been upgrading all of their systems lately, so I assume it was due to that. This is the only time I've experienced downtime (that I know of).

Check out my site to see if it's fast enough for you: www.gassavers.org

Hey,

Not to distract from the discussion, but I like your site...

How did you get Drupal to let the user specify his own password at registration? The user is also given direct access... after registration

Is this a hack ? patch ?

I really want to know :)

My user validation emails either went straight to junk mail or they never received them. People kept waiting for their email and it never came. I decided to eliminate the need for the email with password. I actually found the hack on drupal.org somewhere.

Nice forum hack

most of the forum stuff is done using phptemplate. I originally had icons for "reply, quote, etc. etc." but I took them out as I'm planning on making a module to sort/filter the $links variable. The forum hack isn't done yet either. there are a few other things I want to do but havn't had time to do yet.

I just looked at the "Making Drupal Forums look like phpBB forums" link.

I think after all of the time I've put into theming my site, I might be better off just sticking with my way of doing it.

Oh yeah, if you want a copy of the user.module I'm using, just PM me on my site. I searched for it here, but drupal.org's search feature seems to be a little screwed up right now.

I am especially interested in the registration hack...

We have a mailing list of Doctors, nurses and pros who won't like fiddling with bounced email, filtered email and all that.

I am working on a hack to register them... but this looks better.

I'll be searching for the hack you mentioned. Any help would be appreciated :)

Hi,

Registration hack has been now a module. Check out this.

This module does everything what you want.

WoW, I also see your restricting content access to registered members, and enticing non-registered members with front page content.

Member only access with Anonymous previews... very nice

That wasn't the intent. It looks like that is only happening with the articles, which is a custom module I created originally for scholarly articles. I'll fix that right away.

I guess that explains why so many people are registering and not posting on the forums :P

I don't have any experience in hosting with them, but when I'm googling trying to troubleshoot an issue with my current host, I often land on one of their forum pages, which is ripe with fixes for a variey of problems.

This leads me to believe that their support staff is on the ball, which is usually my #1 concern.

EV1 once shutdown one of my servers without letting me know. When I discovered it was down I contacted them for an explanation. Apparently the server was virus infected and sent out too many mails.

I then ordered a replacement server and asked them to preserve the old disks so I can recover my data and investigate the virus problem. Needless to say, they've trashed my disks.

Since then I'm using server4you.com - service is much better too.

Best regards.

Windows or linux server - which ?

tamarian’s picture

I have used them in the past for a dedicated server.

I had no technical problems with them.

However, I was extremely offended when I learned that they were the first to sign on with SCO to extract Linux taxes or licensing fees, and propagating the myth the Linux contains stolen copyrighted code, which has yet to be proven in a court of law.

So I just couldn't handle paying them to finance SCO's propaganda, and I switched to server matrix. They had the same prices, but more powerful specs on dedicated machines.

I've been with them for a number of years now and it has been really good even during problems, good servers and loads of bandwidth. I even have a load balancer.

However, they are not a tech support company. I have someone do my tech support and monitoring (cheetaweb) and that is really the way to go.

my $0.02 on picking hosting companies

pamphile’s picture

cheetaweb.com ? they seem to charge $75 / hour
Are you paying $75/ hour for support on top of ev1 hosting ?

adlitinc’s picture

no I have a monthly monitoring package with them, they monitor my server and keep it up to date with security fixes and normal upgrades and some of my not so standard requests

pamphile’s picture

interesting... I always wondered what were the best ways to maintain a well managed dedicated server.

Cheetaweb are very good. It's also worth checking out Total Server Solutions (www.totalserversolutions.com). They are all Rackshack/Ev1 veterans and offer a monthly maintenance plan.

My 0.2c - I've been with Ev1 for 6 years. They provide great unmanaged servers. That's the keyword, unmanaged. Don't expect tech support to jump in and help when things go pear-shaped (although they sometimes do). If you don't know server admin then get one of the companies above in to look after the box for you.

Unfortunately the high number of inexperienced server admins (or complete *nix beginners) on the Ev1 network means that it's prime hunting ground for crackers. You will get a lot of brute force etc. going on from day 1. They know that there are a large no. of boxes there run by people/"hosting companies" who don't have a clue. 99% of the complaints in the forum are from people who come there and have their plug pulled. Abuse charge $400/hr although they often just pull and reformat.

SO bottom line - great place if you know what you are doing - or are sensible enough to get someone in who does ;)

I am one of the owners of TotalServerSolutions and just want to put in a great word for ev1!

I work daily with their staff and they are amazing people that can do amazing things. They also have an incredible custom order department that can work wonders. :)

They are a little higher then other places but they have a very solid network and track record, it is worth it.
