The change detailed in https://www.drupal.org/node/2523826 has been backported to Drupal 7.

When this change is deployed there may be some disruption to users as their session cookies may no longer be valid.

If you wish to retain the previous behaviour, you can do so by setting the $cookie_domain global variable in settings.php
