Description:
Since PHP 7.0.10 extension GD could have support for WebP image format.
Core now can create images of this format additionally for currently supported formats
Note: PHP's GD extension should be build with WebP support.
Visit your site's admin/reports/status/php#module_gd
page to make sure format is supported by your installation.

IE11 is no longer a supported browser in about 2 months. Additionally, usage of IE11 is very low. Safari now supports webp as of macOS 11 Big Sur and later. Earlier versions of macOS (Catalina and before) stop receiving support before end of year 2022. If you do not need to support old apple products, then webp is useful now.
