Trainings and/or Summits

Adding references to some of our past training partners. Let's start reaching out to people and discussing training for 2019 with them.

I'm willing to start doing some outreach to training providers and see who is interested. And to coordinate that. Before I do, is there anyone in particular you want me to reach out to? And/or specific topics we really want to try and provide training on?

How many trainings do we want to offer? This has been all over the board in the past. Anywhere from 2 to like 6 one year I think. Are we limited by available space this year?

Off hand, BuildAModule is dormant, and not likely to do training. Though I'm sure Chris would probably let us if we wanted to organize volunteers etc. I was thinking about reaching out to Wes Ruvalcaba at Lullabot who has been doing a CSS training that's not Drupal specific, but I've heard is quite good. And I've heard through the grapevine that David (and Pantheon) might be interested in doing a Drupal 8 introduction training.

I will start sending emails later this week.

Thanks Joe! I'd say you have some great places to start. Is Drupalize.me going to fill one of those spots as well? Agaric has expressed interest, I'd add them to the short list. I'd also suggest reaching out to Promet, Mike Anello and Four Kitchens. In addition to that, Evolving Web has been doing more training, though with Drupal North being so close to our camp that might be problematic. I don't know what our reservation looks like for UST for Thursday at this time, but we can hopefully work under the assumption that we have 5 rooms, the same as last year.

I've been chatting with David at Pantheon, and basically he just needs our go-ahead to proceed with asking his team about training.

I'm totally fine with extending an invite to David and Pantheon. @minneapolisdan if you want to do that feel free. Otherwise I can reach out to him as well.

I don't know if Drupalize.Me will fill one of the spots or not. If we do, it would almost certainly be Drupal 8 Theming training. Which, we've done the last two years at the camp. It's filled up both times. But, I also totally understand if we want to save the space for something different this year. Any thoughts on offering D8 theming training yet again?

Joe, I was told at the meeting last night to contact you -- could we try and get some commerce training included. Last year we started so late that when I contacted the commerce guys, they were already booked at that time. I noticed there are some commerce sessions at the upcoming drupalcon - if you are going, maybe you could converse with them. All I did last year was leave voicemail and emails for commerce guys - they were very slow at getting back to me, and I sent and resent them a few times.

I spoke to Wes today, and he's interested in doing his workshop at our camp. He's done it a few times at other camps, and I've heard good things about it. https://www.midcamp.org/2019/training-proposal/intermediate-advanced-css... I also like the idea of a workshop on something that's not Drupal specific, but still totally useful for people working with Drupal.

@maryannking great suggestion thanks! I'll see if I can get any info from Commerce Guys. And other than that, I'm open to suggestions of people to contact that would be a good fit for Drupal Commerce training.

Mike Anello said he is busy that week and won't be able to make it. Though did express he would love to if he wasn't already booked and would let us know if anything changes.

Mauricio has offered to do either a Drupal 8 Migrations or React training at our camp. I'm inclined to ask him to do the Migrations one as it gives us something that is both specific to Drupal, and appropriate for an intermediate/advanced audience. This would be catering to existing community members who are already pretty likely to attend the camp and want to take advantage of the free training.

However, my guess is the potential audience is smaller than a general React training would be. And there's a chance that React would be a draw for some who might not otherwise attend, and is still useful for many Drupal developers. I think the CSS training we're offering falls into this category as well.

Anyone have additional thoughts they would like to add regarding Migrations vs. React?

David from Pantheon has put together two proposals for us to consider.

Getting Started with Drupal - in contrast to the Drupal 8 Crash Course by Promet which targets content creators, this targets developers who want to learn about how to use Drupal's site-building tools. I like this option because I think it would be useful for us to offer as a way to introduce new developers to Drupal and what it's capable of. This probably requires more marketing on our end to pitch it to people outside our normal attendees.

Automated Workflows with Drupal 8, Composer, GitHub, and CircleCI - this targets more experienced developers who are interested in learning how to use these tools. This is likely more appealing to our existing attendee base.

I think we should pick either the Migrations class from Mauricio, or the Workflows one from David, to fill the space of "not a beginner Drupal developer".

I would like to make a decision about this so we can let both David and Mauricio know and get these trainings posted on the site so people can start registering within the next day or so. My current suggestion is that we do the following:

• (already decided) CSS for Practical Peoples - not Drupal specific, appeals to both existing and new audience
• (already decided) Drupal 8 Crash Course - Drupal specific, appeals primarily to new audience, and potentially to existing audience who wants to get their clients to take the training
• (new) Migrations - Drupal specific, appeals to more advanced members of existing audience, and hopefully helps get more people on the path to D8
• (new) Getting Started With Drupal - Drupal specific, appeals primarily to new audience and gives us something we can promote to developers who are curious about Drupal and why they might want to consider it.

I'd prefer a Migrations training over React training. But both will likely be very much in demand

I'm wondering if we do need two beginner trainings, even if they're oriented at different audiences? There's been a lot of talk about how the community is changing and the decline in hobbyists. It makes sense to have beginner content oriented towards folks interested in getting started with Drupal or coming from other communities and wanting to check it out. But there is also a segment of people out there who are using Drupal for their day jobs and who may or may not attend or participate in the community. Would having another higher-level training attract those people as well?

I'm not sure how to weigh this. On the one hand I think Joe's suggestion is good. On the other, I kind of think we should do Migrations and the Git/CI training rather than another beginner training.

I would agree with that. I think the Migrate or CSS trainings would potentially be a good fit for that audience. At least as likely as Git/CI would anyway. And I like the idea of us having a training that's aimed at developers who are either curious about Drupal, or maybe just started a job that requires them know some Drupal and having the additional background would be useful. And while the Drupal 8 Crash Course is a good intro level course. It's a totally different audience.

I've asked Mauricio to provide more details about the Migrate course so we can get that posted and start getting people signed up, since it sounds like we're on board for that one. Yay! I'm also hopeful we can work some kind of "lets talk migrations" workshop into the day on Saturday. I like that we're helping more people get their sites to D8, and doing what we can to ease that transition.

We now have 4 trainings posted on the site, and taking registrations. I don't have a lead on any others. And I think we can probably close this issue. There are follow up tasks for things like communicating with trainers in the lead up to the event that we should probably open tickets for.

• Create an issue to credit everyone who helped out with facilitating a training.
• Email trainers with details about rooms, time, etc.
• Work with trainers to email attendees with a welcome/prerequisites message
• Follow up with trainers post camp to get feedback on how things went

I think with 3 weeks left, we're set on what we're doing this year.
