Use case: You have a user index and want to also index all content created by the users with them (see also #1710212: Index related content fields of user based indexing). The content (nodes) has one or more file fields, from which you want to extract and index contents as well. This doesn't seem to be possible at the moment.

Based on the existing pattern, this patch would add a module with a data alteration that provides file contents extraction for this scenario.
