After the 8.3 update, I am getting an extra <> on my page as shown in https://db.tt/w9MpZu8RAR
The <> appears just below a views slideshow block, but remains displayed even if the block is disabled. It also is independent of theme.

The theme I use (ZURB Foundation) uses no main-content block on its front page. This is the origin of the spurious "<>" on my page. When I display the main-content block (which was not displayed previously) in the region Left, off page, the spurious "<>" disappears. It seems to me that this is a bug. It was not present in 8.2x.

The main-content html is put into the page even though this block does not appear in the Block Layout page

I'm experiencing something similar. Theme is Adaptive. Both logged in, (01) and logged out (02 and 03) as shown in the attached pictures.

The display suite was causing this problem for me. I have uninstalled it and no more problems. Upgraded to D8.3.1 this evening.

<main id="main" does not occur on a clean install with Bartik theme. We need more information so we can get an understanding of what is going on. I read the issue summary thoroughly.

That's true cilefen, it didn't happen on a clean install for me either, with D8.3. Display Suite seemed to be causing it in my case updating from D8.2.7 to D8.3 and an update is now available from DS using the experimental core Layout Discovery instead of the Layout plugin alpha23 on D8.3.1.

It's working for me now with no more extra <>.
