When generatiing large sitemaps via drush queue-run xmlsitemap_link_process or drush xmlsitemap-rebuild
the entity storage cache must be cleared otherwise it will run out of memory. Attached patch fixes that.

Patch #3 resolved the issue for me. Drush commands for XML sitemap are able to complete now.
