useful when you've got a LOT of url aliases and you're searching for a pattern that is part of hundreds or thousands of others. example search for news , but you've got thousands of news aliases like news/2016/june/xyz123 , but you know that the news alias is for a node and you know the node so you can now with this patch search instead for the system path which is for example node/123 , find your url alias and do what you want.
This patch is currently only available for D7 but would be nice in D8 as well.
The D7 patch works flawlessly.

joseph.olstadjust FYI:
I suggest this very useful patch that adds a url alias search option for searching by system path.
