enable oa_event
click on a day to add an event
the event pops up
the group field has the right value
the section field has no value

This causes a bad usability experience because on save, the event is not added to the calendar.

I cannot reproduce this. When I click on the calendar to add an event both Space and Section have the correct values. Did you check on a new OA install? How are your Space and Sections setup?
