I've got about a dozen posts to which I need to add large, 100mb audio files. I'm using the audiofield module, but it takes several minutes to upload through edit page. I was wondering if I could upload the files via FTP and then link to the existing files.

does the module in question integrate with https://www.drupal.org/project/filefield_sources or https://www.drupal.org/project/remote_file_source?
If no, I'd switch to fielfields and find a module that plays audio via the filefield.

and similar modules, there are php.ini config upload size restrictions.
With large .mp3s. I usually make a small dummy file with the correct filename and extension and upload that through the UI, and then overwrite the actual file with the giant 100MB mp3 monster by cPanel upload or Filezilla upload. In the olden days I used Filezilla a lot. These days the latest 11.62.x cPanel is my preference, even though Filezilla drag and drop can be convenient.

Don't forget to learn how to setup a private file system for your uploaded files.

For mp3s, also deploy the soundmanager2 html5 player setup, with the bar-ui patch, and you'll have the slickest looking and playing website mp3 presentation imaginable.
