I completely adore Basic starter theme. The only struggle I'm having is that it uses .sass syntax. I believe many developers are used to writing a .scss syntax. Anyone else feels the urge to have the "other option"? I can participate in the project, to add this feature.

You can actually add .sass and .scss files to the sass folders interchangeably right now.
Having said that, this request has come up before. I also understand that .scss is the more documented/used syntax. I have started a Roadmap issue for Basic 8.x-2.x here: https://www.drupal.org/node/2847769. We will be taking feedback from Basic users to see if this is a change we should apply to Basic's core code.
I will be marking this issue as "works as designed" for now. But please add your thoughts to the 8.x-2.x Roadmap issue.
Cheers, Leah
