trigger conditional on state change

Is there a way to trigger the conditional BEFORE tab or moving to next field? currently users are frustrated that the fill in say Expense field > tab to next field only then to have to manually backtrack as the conditional field [details of expenses] has now appeared ABOVE. could it be triggered as the user begins to type in [Expenses]. I have tried https://www.drupal.org/project/conditional_fields but it does not seem to add anything
