On views which support multiple pages/tabs, the sky theme have an extremely subtle styling differentiation between the selected tab and the non selected tabs. 20% I may be able to figure this out but in the meantime if it's not hard could someone indicate a css mod which might use a distinct backcolor for the selected tab?

have you inspected the element in question to determine its active styling? When you don't post a link to a site and your asking for CSS help you are making this more of a challenge. The expectation on your part seems to be that someone who is helping would have the theme installed. This will not always be the case at any given time.

I posted this in the theme's support section, thinking that users of the theme would be most likely to have hands on with sky and have it installed. The site is public facing but the pages that have these tabs are not public.

In any case, quite a while ago I found that Sky has a setting for this "Tabs background hover" which for some reason I'd overlooked, and allows control of the element I was interested in. So this issue is resolved - I'd forgotten about this issue I'd created.
