It would be useful to integrate with XML sitemap - if a page is published, but there is a redirect set up from that URL, then it probably shouldn't be included in the sitemap.

I think it should be possible to achieve this with hook_xmlsitemap_link_alter

I'm yet to try it out, but it looks like this functionality was already added to the 7.x-2.x branch of the xmlsitemap project!
