What does exactly mean "routing"?

What does exactly mean in the Drupal programming/developing language "routing definition" ?

I have read following suggestion for trying to create a "Dynamic Title" as a controller plugin with Drupal 8:

I guess that to have a more compatible SEO configuration with Drupal 8 it is a bit more complex as it was for Drupal 7.

Browsers make a 'request' to the server. This says 'give me the data at the path /x/y/z'. 'Routing' is the process of telling the system 'if the browser requests x/y/z, run the function some_function() and send the results back to the browser'.
