It would be nice to target reference-autocomplete result differently with CSS when its invalid or empty. For this some simple css classes could be added to the reference element instead of using only always the same class. This way a theme can easily style it red or smething like that when its an invalid search.
I am attaching a simple patch that accomplishes this.
