*DEPTH TOO GREAT* message using Devel KINT module

I'm using Drupal 8.1.10 and am trying to use the kint tool from the devel module. I have got it working to the point where kint is being displayed on my page and I can expand it by clicking on the plus sign. The problem is that for most items I see *DEPTH TOO GREAT*. I have tried changing the $_kintSettings['maxLevels'] value in the config.default.php file from within the kint module directory. The default value was 7 and I have tried 5 and below. I can see that the change is being applied but I still see *DEPTH TOO GREAT*. Any advice on how to get this working is much appreciated. Thanks.
