Hi chaps,

I'm having feelings about building a project using Drupal and I thought I'd better ask the community before getting hands on, so I'd basically love to hear opinions. Quick background:

- Many years ago I started running a community based on the city I live in. It all started being a blog using Movable Type, which was then migrated several times to Joomla, Wordpress, Drupal and then back to Wordpress.
- In the meanwhile I created a FB group where I would share the articles published in the website. At that point very few people used FB and the group was pretty empty for the very first years. It ended up with most users abandoning the website and using the FB group.
- Nowadays the FB group has >28,000 members and the website >1,900. The website receives <500 unique visitors per day (>1,500 if hot topics are shared from the website to the FB group) and the FB group has a non-stop activity.

I'm still working on the concept for the website and I'm trying to be realistic: I'm not even trying to move the users from FB to the website. But there a few things that I want to achieve:
1) There is too much useful information, including historical pictures of the city, that is posted on the FB and lost forever with virtually no way of managing or ordering it.
2) My view is that FB is having its own momentum which will not last forever and I want to make sure that there is a space where the conversation around our city can continue .
3) I want to monetize the community management activity. Not as a way of living, wich is probably not realistic, but as a way of getting resources to make it grow: organizing events, compensating volunteers that spend long nights managing the community and paying the bills for the hosting.

My idea is to base the web community on resources that are not properly available on FB:
- Business directory.
- Voting system to propose initiatives for the city; similar to open innovation platforms.
- Gallery of images. Still not sure how to empower this, since users love to upload the pictures to FB in exchange of likes.
- Etc.

I've used Drupal in the past but didn't really get up to speed on it so I've decided to start looking at the current options and I've discovered few starting packs: Drupal Commons and Open Social. Both seem to be interesting options but I'm not sure they will load the web with stuff I won't need. I guess it's a matter of first conceptualizing the website.

Sorry for the long post. My question is: do you guys think it makes sense to build this project using Drupal or would you go with another option? If Drupal would be your choice, have you seen similar websites that could be used as a guidance?

Thanks

Building what you describe is pretty straightforward with Drupal, and I would not use a distribution (such as Open Social).

If you want people to log in, https://www.drupal.org/project/simple_fb_connect. If you just want commenting, don't require login -- use https://www.drupal.org/project/facebook_comments. Less friction.
