In the "Setting up this repository for the first time" instructions, we're instructed to:

git checkout -b 7.x-1.x

...

git push origin 7.x-1.x

I think we're at a place where we can say 8.x is a good starting place for new projects.

Also, instructions create an .info, not a .info.yml file.

Same with project release instructions.

Do you mean the instructions on the Version control tab? Those depend from the tag selected right before the instructions.

This is also true for Drupal core, which by default shows the instructions for the 8.2.x branch.
