Support for Drupal 7 is ending on 5 January 2025—it’s time to migrate to Drupal 10! Learn about the many benefits of Drupal 10 and find migration tools in our resource center.
In the "Setting up this repository for the first time" instructions, we're instructed to:
git checkout -b 7.x-1.x
...
git push origin 7.x-1.x
I think we're at a place where we can say 8.x is a good starting place for new projects.
Also, instructions create an .info, not a .info.yml file.
Same with project release instructions.

apadernoDo you mean the instructions on the Version control tab? Those depend from the tag selected right before the instructions.
apadernoThis is also true for Drupal core, which by default shows the instructions for the 8.2.x branch.

gisleNo reply for OP for 3 years, but he obviously means the instructions on the Version control tab.
