Updating Older Modules

I've been searching but am unable to find best practices for updating older modules. I've looked in the documentation to no avail.

Is it required that each module release including beta versions be installed (running update.php with each release install) in sequence to get a module to the current release? Does this approach insure the module and database will update to the latest release without error?
