Overview:

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is Canada’s national police service and an agency of the Ministry of Public Safety Canada. Its role as a national, federal, provincial and municipal policing body, makes it unique in the world.

The RCMP was considering migrating its considerable content to Drupal but given the level of security required, they first wanted to build a test case to identify any concerns this might cause and overcome any potential challenges that might result. Before they could even get started, however, they were faced with a bit of a conundrum: How to bring two completely dissimilar and incompatible systems together. Drupal and Oracle are widely considered incompatible systems, with many documented attempts to get them working together having failed.

Why Drupal was chosen:

Drupal was chosen for its security and open source community.

Describe the project (goals, requirements and outcome):

Web Migration

OPIN built a secure infrastructure on top of an Oracle frame. The Drupal prototype that we created also met all the security requirements of the RCMP, which is itself tasked with overseeing the security of the entire nation. Because of the vast network of developers that stand behind it and the pride the community has in quickly resolving issues, open-source software and Drupal, more specifically, is better positioned to overcome security challenges. Both NASA and the White House have turned to Drupal to power their websites and identified security as one of the reasons. The prototype also met all accessibility and government website requirements while being mobile friendly.
