Since I do not have much experience in this, you are most welcome to join as co-maintainer(s) at any point.

But it would be good if "import" our drupal.org git repository in a way that keeps the history and allows us to track and potentially cherry-pick some bug fixes.

Keeping the commit history is part of the process that we follow in order to transfer the project to the GitHub repository, so that part will be done for sure. Also, in Backdrop we try our best to communicate any bug fix or improvement back to Drupal.org. The thing though is that my php skills are very limited, so I intent to do a direct port to Backdrop so that I can use the module, then leave maintenance to somebody else. I really doubt that I will be fixing anything major.
Anyways, thank you once again and as I said, should you decide to maintain the Backdrop port as well in the future, just let me know in the issue queue in GitHub.
