Following #2635492: Add FontAwesome to 7.x, i created a patch that makes it possible to implement all sort of different iconsets like fontawesome or event sprite based iconsets.
I also attached module that takes advantage ok ths new icon callback to add font awesome support.

The additional 'extra' module here was super helpful. I did make some updates to support Font Awesome 5, and created a repo here: https://github.com/ginkgostreet/social_media_links_extra if anyone is interested I figure this is a better way to add additional icon libraries to this module via PR.
