I was messing around creating revisions with nested field collections and reverting them and such. It all seems to work as far as I can tell. It could use some test coverage. The tests in the 7.x version may be helpful.

Several of the tests from D7 were in line to be upgraded to the new API. They can be found about halfway down this commit and can be used as the basis for completing this task:
