In Drupal 8 there appear to be two places to put 'libraries':

  1. In the same place that Drupal 6 and 7 do: root/sites/all/libraries
  2. In a place consistent with the location of Drupal 8 modules and themes: root/libraries (I'd think this is the preferred location for Drupal 8 going forward.

When the superfish library is placed in the 2nd location, and the 'Path to Superfish library' (admin/config/user-interface/superfish) is set accordingly, superfish reports that the libraries are out of date.

Yeah, thanks Thib, the same superfish 2.x libraries work in the root/sites/all/libraries location but call for an update in the root/libraries location.

Agreed, I am using:

libraries/superfish/jquery.hoverIntent.minified.js
libraries/superfish/superfish.js
libraries/superfish/supersubs.js
libraries/superfish/supposition.js
libraries/superfish/sfsmallscreen.js
libraries/superfish/sftouchscreen.js

With the latest dev version of the module I'm not seeing this. I have superfish in /root/libraries and the status report is showing the Superfish libraries as "installed" with no mention of "out of date".
