You can chose Menu as a search plugin on /admin/config/content/linkit/list/nodes_editor/edit
When i then search i get results but clicking them does not populate the link field. But it works with taxonomy/content.

You have installed some module that turns menu items into entities. The default Linkit search plugin for entities can't handle that type of entity.
