Members followed by a user count display

Hello,
I am trying to display the count of members followed by an user in my Drupal Commons website as it is done here:
https://www.hastac.org/u/steven-l-berg (see right column and attached image 3).
I know how to create a content pane using Views that displays that information (see attached image 2, left column bottom), but what I would like to do is to include that piece of information inside a custom pane that I have created (see left column top pane in image 2). The custom pane provides a substitution code to include the followers count ( %user:flag-commons-follow-user-count) but not for the following count. That allows to include the followers count along other contents on the custom pane, and I would like to be able to do the same with the following count.
Clearly, as the site I mentioned above shows, that is feasible, but my coding knowledge is not enough to get that accomplished.
