Is the Media Gallery module moving forward, or deprecated?

I have been trying to build a modern and friendly way for regular users to share photos on our community website, and jumped into the Media and Media Gallery module a while back. Despite these seeming to solve long-standing problems in Drupal that a lot of people had, it's unclear to me know what the future of this module is.

I have tried to keep up on the latest about Media and related efforts, but I can not figure out where Media Gallery fits in with this. Is it being discontinued? (Is it or some new branch being upgraded to Drupal 8?) If so, is this because there is better practices or simply newer way to accomplish the same thing, or is there once again no simple way going forward to provide users the ability share and manage photo albums?

I would very like to make sure I'm on board with a current best practices (or at least not terrible practices) solution that is also ideally future compatible. Can someone tell me the status of this project? Thanks in advance for your help with this!

p.s., In case the answer to this is, "Media Gallery is dead; what you need to do instead depends on what features you want", my answer is: We would like to keep using something with our Drupal 7 site and continue when we upgrade the site to Drupal 8. We would like users to be able to create albums of images, manage those images individually as well as manage albums, and ideally we'd like to style image display outside of the albums (e.g., for display in a View, etc.) and attach fields to the albums and images within them.
