When a user logs in, he see a page with 2 tabs. Groups and Status update. I want to remove tabs and want a 2/3 column front page where user can post status updates

You can simply do this by cloning the base theme and alter it.
It's not yet possible to do this by configuration, without coding.

Try context, find the "frontpage_tabs" and edit it. Remove "Frontpage Tabs" from block. It should work, but new update still shows up.

joris_luciusIt's not yet possible to configure new tabs, you'll have to program them in a custom module.

joris_lucius7.x is not supported anymore. OpenLucius 2.0 (Drupal 9) is now actively maintained.
So I'm closing this 7.x ticket.
