I could not bring this module to work. Tried all options and of course downloaded the library. I've tried to add some code into a plain long text field.

Yes, the filter is enabled in the "plain text" text format as you can see in the following screenshot.

use the latest 8.x branch and try to play with the "CSS mode for syntax highlighting" options on /admin/config/content/formats/geshifilter and tell us the result.
