It will be convenient if the hook would allow for "file path" or "file" property to instruct loading of a separate file for a given formatter, like hook_menu for example.

Having many custom group formatters that are tightly logical to stay in 1 module make long files.

7.x-2.x branch hasn't been updated in 8 years and doesn't have a recommended release. I'm closing all 7.x-2.x issues that are over 2 years old.

Long files are a bit unavoidable but not dangerous per se. You might want to just group your extra logic into .inc files.
