No matter how many times I changed the color for what a sticky node should use, it would not change the color of the item on the front page - it stayed the same color as all of the other nodes. Finally I hunted down the issue.
The css code says this:
.node-sticky {
When the class inside the source code for the site says this is the class name: node--sticky
I went in to both the file the site was using as well as the original one that came with the theme and changed them both to be:
.node--sticky {
Sure enough, this fixed the issue. Thought I would pass this along in case others ran into the same issue as I did.

mermentau CreditAttribution: mermentau commentedThanks for pointing this out. Core had changed class node-sticky to node--sticky. Made changes in css and fixed same in Mayo theme preview. Committed to Mayo 8.x-1.x-dev.
