Drupal.org has a limited amount of ads displayed in a few areas of the site to support it financially. The ads are served through Double Click for Publishers, and the current configuration is a little cumbersome. We create a block in the Block UI for every ad block, and then specify in block settings urls to display it on. This is not flexible and results in a lot of blocks configured. Instead we want to have a single ad block, which would pass context of the page (url, search terms or taxonomy) to DfP and DfP will display an ad creative based on that context. This will improve ad management and make ads more contextual and relevant to the page.

Todos:

  • Write up more detailed specification of the change
  • Test out existing DfP modules if they provide the functionality we need
