Is drupal a better choice?

I want to create an education social network (non-traditional). I found elgg better than others, but the question is:

Is Drupal a good choice to create a social network?

any other suggestions?

Yes, Drupal is highly customisable and give you all the tools to nuild this kind of project.

I'm sure you could built something with drupal, but I don't know elgg though. It's the first time I read about it and I went to the showcase but didn't saw anything extraordinary on the first look.

The thing is you may need to install some modules to complement the core engine, and most certainly you will need to understand the "Views" module included in Drupal core. With Views you can do anything you imagine. If you know what you want (in term of functionalities) you can search for those kind of modules in Drupal.org search and see if you can somehow have similar options to elgg, but most certainly you will.

I think that the different is that Drupal it's a white sheet that lets you draw anything on it, and elgg it's a paint book for you to paint in the sense that elgg may be easier in the beginning because it's built with one propose.

But the questions remain: Will you be able to evolve to something else when elgg does not offer you that? Does elgg have active community and countless of users committing, helping and developing?

Yes:
a. You can use Drupal to create whatever you want, it is extremely flexible, I always told my friends that Drupal is the king of CMS (if you really technical, and know how to customize it to fit your needs).

c. There is even a book called "Drupal 7 Social Networking" that show you step by step on how to build a social media site using Drupal.

No:
a. If you are not really technical, elgg is the safest option.
b. A lot of Drupal's social media related modules have not been actively maintained
