Can I print just one field to PDF?

I have been able to get my node to print to a PDF using a custom template. The problem is that I can only get $content to print. I wish to make a custom template where I can just print a single field, but can't figure out the syntax. I have tried a million things, starting with $content['my_field_name'] but, alas. no luck. Any thoughts? Thanks.
