As the title says, is it possible to hide the checkbox and newsletter name if only one newsletter available to subscribe?

well its easy to hide it with CSS but how to default it to being checked?

If you just have a single newsletter, you can enable the newsletter specific block in the newsletter category settings. In that case you won't have a checkbox at all.
