As far as I can see, it's currently not possible to sort the groups of a chart. Instead, they will be added in the same order in which they appear in the Views result. That's OK if all groups have the same data points (I think), since then you can use Views' own sorting mechanism to achieve the desired result. However, if that's not the case, you can either have the data points or the groups correctly sort, but not both.
A simple option to sort the groups before they are displayed would solve this problem.

drunken monkeyNo, doesn't quite work – this will screw up the x-axis ordering after all. The attached patch should avoid that problem, though it is a bit more "intrusive".
