dschoni CreditAttribution: dschoni as a volunteer and commentedWhy not working without any drupal menu, but with views instead?
I've tried to configure a view, to display only the linked titles of the contents, filtered out.
The title can be easily enhanced by adding some CSS doing an overwrite on the fields, using the tags content or any other additional field.
This leads to a freely configurable automatically generated menu.
The only problem I have, is to find a relation between the actual displayed page and the views filter, to define the position of the actual page in the resulting menu. Without this it's not possible to enhance or collapse to the actual position.

Greg BoggsA port has been started. It still needs a lot of work, but I did the stuff that was easy for me! Hopefully it helps get this kick started.

apadernoThe module has been marked unsupported. I take it won't be ported to Drupal 8/9.
