I'm trying to wrap my mind around the rationale behind the existence of the "Fields" display type in the Add Content Item widget settings. If the "Field Settings" fieldset listed all fields found in that content type, I could understand — that would make it a freeform content display widget for cases where an existing view mode doesn't suit the circumstances. But as it stands, it only supports the Title, Featured image, and three metadata fields; it seems so… pointless. Even the Body field isn't listed.

Can someone explain the rationale behind the "Fields" display type and its choice of available fields? Thanks.

It for creating little "Featured article" widgets, where you only want like the title, image and published date. I agree that it's not that useful. :-)

But it's only a View! So, if you wanted to create something more flexible for your own use cases, you could create a new View with all the fields that you want to have options for.
