With the latest display suite 8.x-2.x, when you configure a block field and use it, the following error will be thrown:

Fatal error: Call to a member function getFieldDefinition() on a non-object in core/includes/theme.inc on line 1483

Hmm, alex committed the wrong patch in #2550225: quickedit_test_entity_view_alter() creates a non compliant field render array - need to fix that.
