D8 + Sendgrid never sends any mail (no errors)

Not using encryption...

Drupal 8 sends emails for user validation and 'test' are sent ok:

SMTP module is active.
A test e-mail has been sent to myemail@googlemail.com via SMTP. You may want to check the log for any error messages.
The configuration options have been saved.

That is with debug enabled, I checked the log there is no messages relating to SMTP at all.

Sendgrid its self says it never sent anything ot was even contacted, identical settigns work fine with D7 so assuming a D8 problem.
