In WordPress I use the Yoast SEO plugin. It shows me how many characters there are in the meta description, while I'm typing.
I'd like to see similar functionality in Metatag and I'll happily try to provide a patch.

You know, lets leave it open, it's a separate thing to show the current total characters vs a limit.
