Now that all-maintained components have been removed from the 6.x branch and Drupal core 8.x is on the horizon, it would be good to release a final 6.x version so that we can mark it done and carry on with D7/D8 only.
All significant remaining issues have been addressed, the only remaining issue being coding standards, so 6.x-1.0-beta1 has been published at the DrupalCon Barcelona extended sprints. The plan is to keep this beta for one month, then if no problem is reported, merge the coding standards issue and release rc1. After that, if one more month passes without new issues, we will publish 6.x-1.0.
That release is meant to be both the first and final version for 6.x, released before Drupal 6 core itself goes unsupported, to mark the end of 6.x work : all users are expected to upgrade to 7.x or 8.x.
