if I customize the views-view-matrix.tpl.php template I get characters in the cells.
There is an error in this template in the line 32 :

</t><?php print...
modify by
</t<?php print...

The right angle bracket should be added after the ?>. I think that this could be improved or re-done so that modifying the template does not carry such technical debt.
