I have uploaded a document that I wish to link to from a menu item. How can something so simple be so difficult to understand? Where/how do I even find the "node" location of the document (Word)? Need some help - newbie. Thanks.

You need to add full path of your file in menu path.
eg. http://abc.com/sites/default/files/test.pdf
